ABOUT US

WHO WE ARE: Soroptimist is an international organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls, in local communities and throughout the world.

Soroptimist International of Alpine (SI Alpine) has served the Alpine community since 1979, providing monetary awards to young girls that volunteer throughout the community and women desiring to further their education while being the primary supporter of their homes, and supporting local charitable organization in projects that incorporate the mission of Soroptimist to improve the lives of women and girls.

Soroptimist was formed because in 1921 women who were interested in volunteering in their communities were not permitted to join male service organizations. Since that time, the organization has worked to help women improve their standing in the world. The word Soroptimist is coined from the Latin words soror and optima, and loosely translated as “best for women”.

Soroptimist International of the Americas (SIA), to which SI Alpine is a part of, has about 40,000 members. Soroptimist International, the world's largest non-profit service organization for women with nearly 95,000 members worldwide, is the parent organization to which Soroptimist International of the Americas belongs. There are three other organizations that belong to Soroptimist International; Soroptimist International of Great Britain and Ireland, Soroptimist International of Europe, and Soroptimist International of the South West Pacific. Soroptimist International members reside in about 125 countries and territories throughout the world.

SI Alpine is part of the Desert Coast Region of SIA and we welcome you to our site. If you’d like more information about SIA or Desert Coast Region, go to our links section or send us an email at info@sinorwalk.com or sinorwalk@soroptimist.net.

VISION: Be the voluntary service organization chosen by all business and professional women committed to improving the lives of women and girls.

We will share our time, talents and financial resources to enrich our communities. Together, we will:

  • Improve the lives of women and girls
  • Help women achieve economic and political equality
  • Serve as a global voice for women
  • Provide outstanding leadership development opportunities for women
  • Enhance world peace and understanding

Our Heritage and our Purpose: Soroptimist International was founded in Oakland, California in 1921, by a group of 80 women from different professions, to “foster the ideal of service”.

Today, with about 95,000 members in 3,000 clubs in 125 countries and territories, Soroptimmist is the world’s largest, classified service organization of professional women. The Soroptimist mission is to “improve the lives of women and girls, in local communities and throughout the world.”

Soroptimist International of Alpine (SI Alpine) was chartered in 1979. Members of SI Alpine work together to further the Soroptimist mission through a variety of hands-on projects. From one-day events to long-term involvement, members find ways to participate in Soroptimist activities that suit their interests, talents, skills and schedules.

Soroptimist has three annual signature projects: Through the Soroptimist Women’s Opportunity Award, clubs provide financial grants to assist women who are heads of their household, who are trying to improve their lives through education and training. The Soroptimist Violet Richardson Award provides clubs the opportunity to honor girls, ages 14-17, for their volunteer service in the community. The Soroptimist Ruby Award: For Women Helping Women honors a woman who has worked to improve the lives of women and girls through her professional or volunteer work.

For several years, SI Alpine has served homeless women by providing meals and material items to various shelters: Phoenix House, helping thousands to overcome the problems associated with drug and alcohol abuse and lead healthy lives; Angel Faces, helps severely burned girls; Looks Like Me buying wigs for girls with Alopecia Areata (loss of all body hair).

In addition, we support the middle school speech contest and the elementary school essay contest. We are active in community activities: 4th of July Parade, Holiday Parade of Lights, Viejas Days Parade, ALPS awards dinner, and many more events.

Our club also participates in organizational programs on the local level, depending on the specific needs of our community.

Our annual fund raising event in its ninith year is the Mad Hatter Tea and is famous for the hat parade.
